APS - Algeria launches first Children's Parliament: fostering culture of dialogue

ALGIERS - The first Algerian Children’s Parliament (ACP) was launched on Monday, at the People’s National Assembly (lower house of Parliament), in Algiers, intended to give children an experience that embodies the values of dialogue, responsibility, and participation in public affairs.

The installation ceremony was attended by the speaker of the Council of the Nation (upper house of Parliament), Azouz Nasri; the speaker of the People’s National Assembly (lower house of Parliament), Ibrahim Boughali, the President of the Constitutional Court, Leïla Aslaoui; the Minister of National Education, Mohamed Seghir Saadaoui; the Minister of Relations with the Parliament, Nadjiba Djilali, and the National Commissioner for Children's Rights, Meriem Chorfi.

In his remarks on the occasion, Boughali congratulated the student parliamentarians on earning the trust of their peers in elections held at their educational institutions, as well as children representing the Algerian diaspora abroad.

"This parliament provides a valuable opportunity for young parliamentarians to understand societal issues, engage meaningfully in public affairs, and learn how ideas can transform into initiatives and ultimately into tangible achievements," he added.

Boughali addressed the children, saying: "Sitting here today under the dome of this parliament marks a pivotal moment in your educational journey and the true beginning of developing your leadership skills. This experience goes beyond mere symbolic representation, it's a genuine opportunity to learn teamwork, practice respectful dialogue, listen to different viewpoints, and make responsible decisions."

For his part, the Minister of National Education praised this initiative, noting that it aligns with the State’s approach to supporting children and promoting students’ participation in school and institutional life, contributing to the formation of a generation that is conscious of the values of the Republic and imbued with a culture of dialogue and responsibility.

In a speech, the Interim President of the Algerian Children’s Parliament, Abdallah Rkabi, said that the launch of the parliament's first session will enable young Algerians, including children of the diaspora, to voice their concerns directly to the government for action.
