APS - Algeria to boost internet speeds with new submarine cable

ALGIERS, 15 December 2025 (APS) - Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, announced on Monday that the foundation stone for a new submarine cable project linking Algeria to the international communications network will soon be laid, significantly improving internet speed in the country.

Speaking on Algerian Radio's Channel I, Zerrouki stated that the foundation stone for a new submarine cable project will be laid in the next two days, aiming to enhance Algeria's internet infrastructure, which currently supports a capacity of 10.2 terabits per second.

He emphasized that Algeria is now in a strong position regarding internet speed, thanks to this massive storage capacity.

In a related update, the minister affirmed that the number of fiber optic subscribers has reached 2.9 million, with that number expected to hit 3 million in the coming weeks.

"We seek to achieve nationwide fiber optic coverage by 2027," said the same official.

Zerrouki also highlighted that Algerian fiber optics has now extended to the borders of Mauritania and Niger.

Additionally, the Algiers Declaration on Fair, Safe, and Responsible Digital Platforms in Africa," adopted on December 7 in Algiers, presented an action plan to safeguard African data, recalled the minister.
