Maestro Riccardo Chailly has been released from the Monzino Cardiology Center in Milan, where he was taken after feeling ill while conducting A Lady Macbeth of the McEsk District at La Scala Wednesday night, sources said Thursday.
The 72-year-old Chailly, whose treatment has been reviewed, is doing well, and it has not been ruled out that he could be back on the podium as early as Saturday for the next performance of Shostakovich's opera.
This is a production that is particularly dear to the maestro, but it requires significant physical effort given its length and complexity.
The Milan born conductor was rushed to hospital while the performance was called off half-way through.
The opera opened La Scala's season December 7 to 11 minutes of applause.
