HINA - Plitvice Lakes National Park regains high international conservation rating

ZAGREB, 23 Oct (Hina) - Plitvice Lakes National Park has regained a high international conservation rating after eight years, moving from a category of “significant concern” to “good with some concerns,” according to a new assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Park authorities said on Wednesday the report confirms the effectiveness of current management practices, protection measures and investments aimed at preserving the park’s unique natural heritage. The IUCN review highlighted the importance of maintaining the park’s water system, tufa barriers, biodiversity and visitor management.

Park director Tomislav Kovačević said the IUCN recognition demonstrates that it is possible to protect a site of exceptional natural value while pursuing sustainable management in line with UNESCO standards.

The report found that the park’s ecological values remain well preserved despite environmental pressures. Water quality in the lakes has remained stable and good, long-term monitoring shows, supporting the ongoing formation of tufa barriers that are key to the park’s universal value.

To ease pressure from tourism, visitor limits have been introduced, ticketing has been digitalised and infrastructure upgraded. Overall management was rated effective and science-based.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Plitvice Lakes continues efforts to preserve its original landscape and natural processes, with a focus on sustainable tourism and public education about nature conservation.
