ZAGREB, 16 Oct (Hina) - The City of Zagreb received the EU Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities label in Brussels, the city administration announced, noting that the recognition confirms Zagreb as a leader on the path toward climate neutrality and sustainability.
Zagreb is the only Croatian city to receive this prestigious label, awarded during the European Week of Regions and Cities, placing it among 100 European cities leading the transition to a sustainable, decarbonised, and climate-resilient future. Other recipients include Amsterdam, Bratislava, Rome, Munich, and Rotterdam.
Mayor Tomislav Tomašević said the award is a confirmation that the city is on the right path toward a sustainable and resilient urban environment focused on the well-being of its residents. He added that it reflects the dedicated work of all city departments and the REGEA agency, and serves as an incentive to continue accelerating efforts in combating climate change.
The EU Mission Label provides Zagreb with access to technical assistance from the European Investment Bank, faster approval procedures for co-financing, and more favourable financing arrangements for decarbonisation projects, sustainable mobility, green infrastructure, and climate resilience for both the public and private sectors.
The award is the result of drafting the Climate City Contract, a strategic planning document that outlines the set of actions needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2030. Its quality and ambition were confirmed through detailed evaluations conducted by the European Commission, the European Investment Bank, and the NetZeroCities consortium, the city administration said.
Mayor Tomašević described the Climate City Contract as a commitment to future generations. "It is a promise that we will work collaboratively, innovatively, and persistently toward a more sustainable, resilient, and just future for all. Together, we will undergo this transformation and build a city that we can proudly hand over to our children and grandchildren," he said.
