Italian exports to the United Stated in August, the month when US President Donald Trump's tariffs on EU goods kicked in, were down by 21.1% compared to the same month in 2024, Istat said on Thursday.
The national statistics agency said Italian exports were down 1.1% overall in monetary terms in August year-on-year.
It said there were also big drops to Turkey (-25.9%) and China (-16.3%), although there were rises in exports to France (+20.6%), Spain (+9.4%), the Netherlands (+13.5%), the United Kingdom (+7.3%) and Belgium (+8.8%).
Istat said exports were down 2.7% in August compared to July, while imports fell 3.7% in month-on-month terms.
It said Italy had a trade surplus of 2.050 billion euros in August (172 million for EU countries and 1.878 billion for non-EU countries).
The trade surplus amounted to 5.481 billion euros excluding energy.
