A decrease of 18.8% was recorded in the country’s trade balance deficit in August this year, as the decline in the value of imports far exceeded that of exports, the Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Wednesday.
Specifically, according to ELSTAT data on merchandise trade, the following emerge: The total value of imports in August 2025 amounted to 5,450.6 million euros, compared with 6,263.2 million euros in the same month of 2024, showing a decrease of 13 percent (excluding petroleum products, there was a decrease of 173.8 million euros or 3.8 percent, while excluding petroleum products and ships, the decrease was 222.7 million euros or 4.9 percent).
The total value of exports amounted to € 3,350.3 million euros, compared with 3,677.4 million euros in August 2024, showing a decrease of 8.9 percent (excluding petroleum products, there was a decrease of 181.5 million euros or 7.1 percent, while excluding petroleum products and ships, the decrease was 183.5 million euros or 7.3 percent).
The trade balance deficit amounted to 2,100.3 million euros, compared with 2,585.8 million euros in August 2024, showing a decrease of 18.8 percent (excluding petroleum products, there was an increase of 7.7 million euros or 0.4 percent, while excluding petroleum products and ships, there was a decrease of 39.2 million euros or 2 percent).
During the eight-month period (January-August 2025), the total value of imports amounted to 53,516.4 million euros, compared with 55,902.1 million euros in the same period of 2024, showing a decrease of 4.3 percent (excluding petroleum products, there was an increase of 1,466.8 million euros or 3.5 percent, while excluding petroleum products and ships, there was an increase of 1,318.7 million euros or 3.2 percent).
The total value of exports amounted to 31,817.8 million euros, compared with 33,751.9 million euros in the first eight months of 2024, showing a decrease of 5.7 percent (excluding petroleum products, there was an increase of 822.1 million euros or 3.5 percent while excluding petroleum products and ships, there was an increase of 870.6 million euros or 3.7 percent).
The trade balance deficit amounted to 21,698.6 million euros, compared with 22,150.2 million euros in the same period of 2024, showing a decrease of 2 percent (excluding petroleum products, there was an increase of 644.7 million euros or 3.6 percent, while excluding petroleum products and ships, there was an increase of 448.1 million euros or 2.5 percent).
