ALGIERS — Algeria and Italy are linked by a robust longstanding friendship and dependable strategic partnership, demonstrated through several vital projects implemented across various sectors, mirroring a strong political commitment to boost cooperation relations between the two friendly countries.
During the official visit he is paying, starting this Tuesday, in Italy, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, will co-chair, with the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, the 5th High-Level Algerian-Italian Intergovernmental Summit.
This visit holds particular importance for strengthening historical friendship ties and reinforcing bilateral relations between the two friendly countries in several fields, according to a statement from the Presidency of the Republic.
Following the promulgation of the new investment law, which enshrines the win-win principle, several Italian companies have expressed their willingness to launch projects in Algeria, encouraged notably by the guarantees provided in this text in favor of foreign investment.
In light of this visit, economic operators from both countries will examine investment possibilities and new partnerships in different sectors, such as energy, circular economy, infrastructure, transport, agriculture, industry and pharmaceutical industry.
Bilateral relations between the two countries have experienced, in recent years, a notable dynamic, mirroring the common will of the leaders of both countries to give them new momentum, by strengthening dialogue and strategic cooperation on the basis of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Good Neighborliness linking Algeria and Italy.
In this regard, the President of the Republic conducted, in May 2022, a State visit to Italy, which enabled to consolidate the excellent relations between the two countries and to sign several important cooperation agreements.
During this visit, the President of the Republic recalled that “What Algerian memory retains of Italy, a friendly country, is very positive,” praising the quality of relations between the two countries.
At the invitation of Meloni, the President of the Republic participated, in June 2024 in Bari (Italy), in the G7 summit. This visit was crowned by a strategic agreement concerning the implementation of a megaproject in the province of Timimoun, in the name of the “Mattei Africa Foundation,” for the production of cereals and legumes, as well as in the field of the agro-food industry.
For his part, the Italian President, Sergio Mattarella, conducted in November 2021, a State visit to Algeria, which allowed to broaden the field of cooperation between the two countries, through the signing of three (3) important agreements in justice, education and culture.
The President of the Republic and his Italian counterpart have not ceased, through the meetings and exchanges they have had, to underline the great convergence of views on various international and regional issues of common interest, notably concerning the promotion of peace, stability and prosperity in the Mediterranean region, but also regarding the situation in Palestine, Western Sahara, Libya and the Sahel.
In January 2023, the President of the Italian Council of Ministers conducted a visit to Algeria, which was crowned by the signing of a Joint Declaration, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Good Neighborliness, and four (4) memorandums of understanding and cooperation in the sectors of energy, technologies and space activities for peaceful purposes.
This was complemented by a cooperation agreement between Algeria’s Economic Renewal Council (CREA) and Italy’s General Confederation of Industry (Confindustria).
As part of the exchange of visits between the two countries, General Saïd Chanegriha, Deputy Minister to the Minister of National Defense, Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (PNA), conducted a visit to Italy, in October 2024. A visit which allowed to highlight “the excellence of military cooperation between the two friendly countries, which reflects the level of understanding and the great confidence characterizing Algerian-Italian relations.”
As part of the preparation of the 5th High-Level Algerian-Italian Intergovernmental Summit, and in accordance with the well-established tradition of regular political consultation between the two countries, Algiers hosted, last June, the 4th Algerian-Italian strategic dialogue.
