Families in Italy are getting smaller and, in the 2023-2024 period, over 36% of households were made up of single people, Istat said in its annual report on Wednesday.
The national statistics agency said only 28.2 of households were made up of couples with children.
The report cited marital instability, the low fertility rate and the postponement of parenthood as factors in Italian families getting smaller.
It said the rise in the proportion of single households regarded all age groups, although it was especially acute among the elderly.
It said almost 40% of people aged 75 and over live alone, most of them being women.
Istat said blended families, unmarried couples, not-widowed single parents and not-widowed single people now account for 41.1% of households.
