Pope Leo XIV has said that he never expected to become the new leader of the Catholic Church.
"After Pope Francis died, that very beautiful Church mechanism of a long tradition, of congregations first and then the conclave, began and I can honestly tell you, it never crossed my mind that what then happened, would have happened," the American pontiff told a group of Peruvians on Monday.
"I think that our God of surprises sprang a really big one this time.
"As I have often said, one must know how to accept the will of God".
