ANA-MPA - Eurostat confirms Greece had 4.8% of GDP primary surplus in 2024

Eurostat on Tuesday officially confirmed that Greece's fiscal performace in 2024 has significantly surpassed the initial forecasts and budgetary targets.

According to the updated figures, the primary surplus of the general government stood at 4.8% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), significantly exceeding the initial target of 2.5% of GDP. In absolute terms, the primary surplus amounted to 11.4 billion euros, compared to a target of 6 billion euros.

The overall fiscal balance (including interest) also appears to be in surplus, standing at 1.3% of GDP, in a clear departure from the projected target for a deficit of 0.7% of GDP.

The relevant figures were submitted by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) to Eurostat at the end of March, in accordance with the provisions of the European Union's excessive deficit procedure.
