APS - Algerian director Abdenour Zahzah’s film “Frantz Fanon” wins award at Fespaco

ALGIERS- The feature film “Frantz Fanon” by Algerian director Abdenour Zahzah was awarded a prize in Burkina Faso at the closing of the 29th Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (Fespaco), announced the organizers.

In his congratulatory message to the film crew, the Minister of Culture and Arts, Zouhir Ballalou, affirmed that “the Prize, awarded in the country of Thomas Sankara (Burkina Faso), a revolutionary leader and one of the symbols of liberation in Africa, rewards cinematographic works that address the continent’s problems with depth, criticism, and courage.”

The film highlighting the ideas and positions of psychiatrist Frantz Fanon, an anti-colonialist militant who fought alongside Algerians during the liberation revolution, “delves into the memory of anti-colonialism and the resistance of African peoples,” the minister emphasized.

Made in 2024, this film, which portrays in 90 minutes the life and journey of the anti-colonial activist and psychiatrist of Martinican origin Frantz Fanon (1925-1961), took part in the official competition in the feature film category, alongside ten other films from African countries, such as Egypt, Tunisia, Senegal, Togo and Cameroon.
