NNA - In conflict zones, communities and service providers face significant challenges in ensuring access to clean water. A collaboration between the AgenceFrançaise de Développement (AFD), UNICEF, the European Union (EU), and the Ministry of Energy and Water has enabled Lebanon’s Water Establishments (WEs) to continue pumping and distributing water to over 1.5 million people. Focusing on solar-powered solutions, infrastructure rehabilitation, and network expansions, this project, funded by the EU is ensuring a more resilient and sustainable water system, providing essential access for the population.
Aligned with the National water strategy adopted by the Ministry of Energy and Water in June 2024, this initiative has significantly enhanced infrastructure resilience. The solarization of 14 water stations has reduced energy costs, while the rehabilitation of eight water stations and one water channel, along with the expansion of six gravity-fed networks and installation of three new water systems, have collectively improved service reliability. These efforts have not only ensured sustained access to water during the different crises but also contributed to the financial recovery of WEs by reducing operational costs.

Relatively simple rehabilitation measures, combined with solar systems, ensured an exponentially positive outcome. By shifting to a more service-oriented approach where applicable, we’re not only improving the reliability of water services but also strengthening citizens’ trust in their public water service operators.”

AFD, UNICEF, and the EU remain committed to securing clean water access across Lebanon. A recent field missionassessed progress, engaging stakeholders and communities to ensure ongoing improvements.
