ANA-MPA - Mendoni: Measures have been taken for the protection of antiquities in the Cyclades

A broad meeting on the protection of the cultural heritage of the Cyclades in light of the intense seismic activity recorded near the island of Santorini was held on Thursday, February 6, under the leadership of the Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.

According to a culture ministry announcement on Friday, with the onset of the phenomenon, the competent Ephorate of Antiquities of the Cyclades, implementing the standard instructions for dealing with seismic activity, took all the necessary preventive measures to protect the cultural heritage of the island.

In particular, at the Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the Archaeological Museum, the exhibits have been placed on lower shelves, while protective materials have been placed to ensure their safety in the event of further intensification of the phenomenon. Special attention was given to the exhibits kept in glass cases, large vases and sculptures, which were appropriately protected to limit any potential risk. At the archaeological site of Akrotiri, the workshops and warehouses are protected, in accordance with safety requirements. Corresponding measures have been taken for the other islands, where seismic activity is noticeable.
