HINA - Turkish and Croatian companies win contract for Omišalj gas terminal expansion

ZAGREB, 14 Jan (Hina) – The LNG Hrvatska company has selected the €14.6 million bid by Turkish shipbuilder Kuzey Star Shipyard to expand the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal on the northern Adriatic island of Krk, while Zagreb-based S.C.A.N. has secured a €2 million equipment supply deal.

The planned modifications include the installation of a new regasification module, which will further increase the capacity of the floating terminal in Omišalj, specifically the LNG Croatia vessel, by 250,000 cubic metres of regasification per hour.

The regasification module, weighing 470 tonnes, is being manufactured by the Norwegian company WGS in China. Once it is completed, it will be transported to the contractor's site, where prefabrication, preparatory work and integration will take place. The module is expected to be completed in February this year, after which its installation will begin.

It will operate at a working pressure of 70 to 95 bar, with a minimum seawater temperature of 10°C. The entire process must be carried out in accordance with the high standards of the DNV classification society, and the contractors are required to ensure the system's full functionality and compliance before it is commissioned.

The LNG Croatia vessel, built in 2005 in South Korea, already has an existing regasification module with a capacity of 450,000 cubic metres per hour. This module consists of three regasification units and is connected to several systems necessary for the safe and efficient management of gas.

The current floating terminal is insufficient to meet increasing demand. Although the Krk terminal already serves as a key energy hub, its modernisation and capacity expansion will further enhance efficiency, meet growing energy needs, and ensure a stable gas supply for both Croatia and the broader European market.

The Turkish shipyard and the Zagreb-based company secured the contract through an international public tender, the results of which were announced on Monday, 13 January.
