The first confirmed incident of HMPV in Greece has been admitted to an ICU at Papanikolaou hospital in Thessaloniki, it was announced on Wednesday.
The patient, a 71-year-old man, had been taken to the hospital a few days earlier suffering from pneumonia. However, his condition swiftly deteriorated in just two days and he needed to be intubated.
The state of the man's health, who also suffers from other underlying conditions, prompted doctors to carry out tests to determine the cause of his infection, which detected the virus.
The instructions given by the National Public Health Organisation (EODY) to the doctors and nurses at Papanikolaou hospital on how to deal with the incident are similar to those issued for the coronavirus, such as - for example - the observance of strict hygiene rules and minimum distances.
