HINA - Croatian volunteers plant 53,000 trees in 2024

ZAGREB,  2 Jan (Hina) -The Croatian Scout Federation has spearheaded a remarkable reforestation campaign, planting 53,000 trees in 2024 alone, primarily pedunculate oaks, as part of a broader effort that has seen 178,000 trees added to Croatia's landscape in the last three years.

The reforestation actions are being carried out as part of the project "CO2MPENSATING BY PLANTING" and the educational program "Šumoborci", organized by the Croatian Scout Federation, the state-run forest management company "Hrvatske Šume (HŠ)", and the agency HEARTH (an agency for corporate social responsibility).

"This year has been the most intense so far. In two cycles this year—spring and autumn—37 reforestation actions were held with around 3,400 volunteers, resulting in the planting of 53,000 trees, mostly pedunculate oaks," reported the Croatian Scout Federation.

The project was launched at the end of 2021 to restore forest areas that were damaged directly or indirectly by climate change or other natural disasters, which have led to the degradation of thousands of hectares of forest land.

In the three years of implementation, approximately 9,900 "Šumoborci" volunteers participated in reforestation actions across Croatia, planting more than 178,000 new trees, predominantly oaks, according to the Croatian Scout Federation.

The preparation of the land for reforestation, selection of locations and suitable tree species, expert assistance, and monitoring of the reforestation actions are carried out in collaboration with experts from the HŠ company.

The project has involved more than 40 partner schools and 35 companies so far.

Šumoborci and Boranka – Volunteer Reforestation Programmes

The project "CO2MPENSATING BY PLANTING", the "Šumoborci" programme, and its sister project Boranka are currently the largest volunteer reforestation programmes in Croatia.

The project is supported by the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth, the Agency for Mobility and EU Programs, the European Commission Representation in Croatia, the European Parliament Office in Croatia, and the City of Zagreb.
