ATA - Albania-Italy migration deal, first 16 migrants arrive in Shëngjin

TIRANA, October 16/ATA/ Albania – Italy began today implementation of the migration deal. The agreement was signed last November by the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her Albanian counterpart Edi Rama.

According to media reports, an Italian ship with 16 migrants on board landed today in the port of Shëngjin, registering the first group of migrants.

Among them, there are 10 migrants from Bangladesh and six from Egypt, who were rescued at sea after leaving Libya. According to the agreement, the center set up in Albania will hold men who are intercepted in international waters while trying to cross from Africa to Europe.

This agreement reached between Albania and Italy in November last year stipulates that Albania will accept up to 36,000 migrants per year for a period of five years and the asylum applications of these migrants will be processed in two centers in Albania.

According to the agreement reached between the two countries, the procedures for migrants will be carried out in the two relevant centers.

The first center in Shëngjin will be used for migrant identification procedures, while the second center, in Gjadër, about 20 kilometers away, a former military airport facility, will be used to shelter migrants until asylum requests are processed.

Italy has agreed to host migrants who are granted the asylum. Those who are not granted the asylum will be deported directly from Albania.
