APS - Elimination of 45,000 substandard housing units 2019-2023

ALGIERS- The programme to reduce precarious housing has resulted in the eradication of nearly 45,000 units over the period between 2019 and 2023, the national Economic, Social and Environmental Council (NESEC) in it-s latest report on social and human development in Algeria.

According to the document, about 45,000 substandard housing units have been eradicated (6,117 units in 2023, 6,210 units in 2022, 11,291 units in 2021, 10,759 units in 2020 and 10,225 units in 2019).

In its report, the NESEC says the National Housing Policy has witnessed "significant developments" during the period between 2019 and 2023 to meet the growing needs of the population, adding that construction and refurbishment programmes have been implemented to provide decent and affordable housing for all citizens while eliminating slums and creating a dynamic property market, mainly in rural areas and housing through self-build.

To strengthen the housing sector's financing, the National Housing Fund was transformed into a housing bank in 2022.

The NESEC notes that the sector's dynamism has increased the national housing stock to over 10.5 million in 2022, that is, an additional 2.9 million compared with 2012.

The Council mentions the diversification of housing programmes (LPL, LPA, AADL, LPP, rural housing, self-build), meant to respond to the different socio-professional categories according to their income.
