TAP - Seminar on uses of video in news agencies recommends mainstreaming mobile journalism and various multimedia

TUNIS/Tunisia - (TAP) - The seminar on “Uses of Video at News Agencies: Comparative Mediterranean Approaches,” organised on June 17 and 18 in Tunis by Tunis-Afrique-Presse (TAP) news agency, in association with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and the Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN), recommended at the end of its work to promote the use of mobile journalism in newsrooms because of its important role in diversifying content and increasing production. It also recommended giving due importance to videos for their important role in redesigning press work in news agencies and diversifying their media and news products. The recommendations of the seminar also call for the diversification of technologies used besides mobile phones, cameras and editing technologies to produce digital content of high quality and value. Emphasis was placed on the need to support training and rehabilitation efforts aimed at improving the skills of agency journalists and to provide them with the needed skills to use modern media and their techniques as part of a strategy aimed at investing in human resources and adapting them to the challenges of the interactive digital landscape. Participants also recommended adjusting the marketing plan for the new video service after determining the appropriate business model. They therefore stressed the need of studying the smartphone user base in accordance with the characteristics of each country's community mode and the human and material opportunities available to each agency, while working to create the different forms of video production. Secretary-General of the Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN) George Penintaex called for the need to develop a programme of co-operation and exchange of experiences between AFP and TAP news agencies, while seeking to invest in young talents capable of creativity and innovation in content industry. During the seminar, the experiences of the various Mediterranean news agencies in the use of videos and various working methods were reviewed. Representatives of the participating agencies emphasised the need to mainstream video production and create an audiovisual production unit as an added value of the work in news agencies and due to its role in strengthening the role of news agencies in their environment as a major source of professional news shifting from traditional journalism to multimedia journalism offering diversified products. The seminar, which was opened Monday by CEO of TAP Agency Rachid Khechana, the Secretary-General of the Alliance of Mediterranean News Agencies and Resident Representative of the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) Holger Dix, is part of TAP's preparations for launching a video production unit in the coming weeks, a project funded by the European Union under the Media Support Programme in Tunisia.
