Jannik Sinner will not play the upcoming US Open with the five-time slam winner and world number one saying Friday he was pulling out due to a knee injury.
"Despite the hard work done with my team and the medical staff, we have had to make the difficult decision not to participate in this year's US Open," a statement from the two-time Wimbledon and Aussie Open winner and one-time US Open winner read.
In recent weeks, Sinner had undergone regular check-ups between Milan and JMedical, the Juventus facility in Turin, for his knee problem.
"We returned to training in Monte Carlo in the last few days and realized we needed more time to recover from the problem with my right knee," the South Tyrolean champion said.
"I'm obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York holds a special place in my heart.
I couldn't wait to return to play in that electrifying atmosphere, in front of a fantastic crowd." His plan now includes remaining in Europe and continuing his recovery with the medical and athletic training staff, with the goal of being ready for the Asian tour and the tournaments in Beijing and Shanghai.
The 2026 US Open runs from Sunday, August 23, to Sunday, September 13, 2026.
With Sinner out his great rival and seven-time slam winner Carlos Alcaraz must be rated favourite despite missing the French Open and Wimbledon with a wrist injury.
