Jannik Sinner had more tests Monday at Juventus's medical centre in Turin a day after turning 25 with the five-time slam winner and world number one's participation in the US Open starting August 23 still in doubt after he pulled out of the Cincinatti Masters with a right-knee issue.
The results of the scans at the J Medical centre will decide whether the two-time Wimbledon winner, twice Australian Open winner and one-time US Open winner will be at Flushing Meadows.
The Italian Tennis Federation sent an open letter to the South Tyrolean on his birthday saying "Italy loves you and is crazy about you.
"In these first 25 years of yours," the Italian Tennis Federation recalled, "you've had the (well-deserved) honor of crossing rackets with Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic.
"You've used those moments like a sponge: you've absorbed them, you've soaked up their greatness, you've learned from their moves, you've adapted the lessons to yourself and your talent.
"Experts in numbers and analogies have pointed out that you and Federer won your third slam in your twenty-first appearance at a Major.
"And that, at your age, you've won the same number of Slam titles as did a certain Novak Djokovic.
"Yes, we're quite convinced that this information has put you in a good mood and is the best confidence booster for you, but always in your measured way of being.
"With Nadal, the similarities concern the approach, the attitude to work.
"But we'd like to add that you've also inherited from them the behavior, the praxis to use to be a high-profile athlete and champion.
"Dearest Jannik...
this is why Italy loves you and is crazy about you, even though you've done nothing to seek honors and fame, to get front pages and covers.
You've simply, always, behaved in a courteous and polite manner. In every situation and with every person, regardless of social rank.
"Because that's how you mountain people are: naturally polite, well-disposed toward others, ready to lend a hand if needed.
"But also, at the same time, good at defending yourselves, maintaining certain boundaries. It may be talent, but it's clear that these are innate stigmas: have you ever seen a childhood friend of yours from Sesto (Sexten), an acquaintance, or any politician, take advantage of you to get those five minutes of popularity that any of us aspires to in our lives? "The answer is: no one has ever betrayed you to reveal some foolish thing from the past. Never.
"Perhaps this is also why you always make sure to remember that the most important thing is a team you can trust.
"Dear, dearest Jannik... we love you because you don't look for trouble. You're good. You're always available, but you don't give assists to the paparazzi. People, fans, enthusiasts have understood this perfectly.
"They don't see you as a double-crosser, an opportunist, a three-card trickster.
"They see you as a real person: without the killer expression, they appreciated the nerdy phenomenon who managed to gain respect in life from the bullies with the racket.
"Dearest, dearest Jannik... how can you not love you? "You wouldn't hurt a fly - concluded the Tennis Federation - except for your opponents on the court. "The beauty of your person is knowing, and seeing, that you go from a football ovation (San Siro, remember?) to a visit to the oncology ward of the pediatric hospital without batting an eyelid".
