NNA - The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has launched the first implementation steps to rehabilitate the infrastructure and facilities associated with Kleyat - President René Moawad Airport, as part of its plan to rehabilitate and reactivate the airport, marking a gradual transition from the planning and preparation phase to actual implementation on the ground.
In this context, the ministry announced, through the Public Procurement Authority platform, a tender for the rehabilitation and maintenance of the road, entrance and grounds of Kleyat Airport. Bids are scheduled to be opened on August 27, 2026. The works constitute a key component of the requirements for rehabilitating the infrastructure surrounding the airport and ensuring the readiness of its access points, grounds and facilities supporting its operation.
The move forms part of an integrated plan adopted by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to restore Kleyat Airport to Lebanon’s air transport network by carrying out the required works in successive phases, in parallel with completing the necessary technical, operational, security and administrative requirements in accordance with the regulations and standards governing civil aviation.
The ministry stressed that reactivating Kleyat Airport constitutes a national and strategic project that extends beyond the airport’s technical and operational dimensions, given the role it can play in developing Lebanon’s air transport system, strengthening the capabilities of the civil aviation sector, and providing additional aviation infrastructure to support Beirut–Rafic Hariri International Airport and enhance the resilience of Lebanon’s air transport sector.
Reactivating the airport would also help stimulate economic activity and development in Akkar Governorate, northern Lebanon and surrounding areas by creating new investment and employment opportunities, revitalizing sectors linked to transport, tourism, services and trade, and strengthening these areas’ connectivity with the country’s key economic facilities.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport stressed that its approach to the project is based on moving from plans and studies to gradual implementation on the ground, with each component to be completed in accordance with operational priorities and needs, beginning with essential infrastructure, access points and grounds and progressing to the completion of all other equipment, facilities and services required for the airport to operate safely, efficiently and sustainably.
The ministry affirmed that the launch of the tender constitutes one of the first implementation steps in the process of rehabilitating Kleyat Airport and that work will continue successively to complete the remaining phases, in coordination with the relevant official, security and technical authorities, toward achieving the ministry’s objective of reactivating the airport and harnessing its potential within an integrated national vision for the development of Lebanon’s air transport sector.
