Fiorentina said Monday that they have appointed Fabio Grosso, a key member of Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning team, as their new coach.
The Florence side survived a relegation battle last season, when they were under Stefano Pioli and then Paolo Vanoli, while Grosso comfortably guided Sassuolo to Serie A safety with an 11th-placed finished, having won promotion with them the previous campaign.
Grosso, 48, scored the breakthrough extra-time goal in Italy's victory over Germany in the semi-final of the 2006 World Cup and converted the decisive penalty in the shoot-out win over France in the final.
