European Union member States may recognize newspaper publishers' rights to fair remuneration from online platforms that use their content, the European Court of Justice ruled Tuesday in a case regarding an appeal by Meta against Italian media watchdog AGCOM.
The tech giant had challenged before the Lazio Regional Administrative Court (TAR) a decision by the Italian authority establishing the criteria for defining the right to fair remuneration for publishers for the online use of their publications, as well as a regime aimed at ensuring such remuneration.
The judges, however, found it compatible with EU law.
