ATA - Karakaçi: Vlora Energy Hub a key project for Albania’s energy security and independence

TIRANA, April 29 /ATA/ Energy security constitutes a top priority of state policy, serving as a fundamental pillar of economic stability and national resilience, stated the Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enea Karakaçi.

At a meeting in Tirana on Tuesday, where Albania signed an energy security agreement with the United States and Greece, Minister Karakaçi said the country is taking concrete steps to mitigate risks associated with reliance on hydropower and build a more sustainable, future-oriented energy system.

“For Albania, this means taking concrete steps to reduce exposure to hydropower-related risks and to build a more sustainable system for the future,” the minister said.

He added that, within this framework, the country is pursuing reforms and strategic projects to transform the energy sector, focusing on diversifying energy sources and strengthening supply security.

According to Karakaçi, at the heart of this transformation lies the strategic partnership with the United States, aimed at establishing long-term cooperation to ensure a secure and sustainable energy future.

One of the flagship projects of this vision is the construction of the Vlora Energy Hub, which is expected to play a significant role in positioning Albania on the regional energy map.

The project envisages an increase in generation capacity of approximately 250 megawatts, the upgrading of energy storage infrastructure, and the development of infrastructure links to integrate with the regional gas transmission network.

Specifically, it includes the transformation and revitalization of the existing thermal power plant into the Vlora Energy Hub, the addition of around 250 megawatts of new generation capacity, and the construction of the Fier–Vlora pipeline, connecting the hub to both the national and regional gas transmission networks.

“The Vlora Energy Hub is a multifaceted project that will define Albania’s role on the regional energy map,” the minister said.

According to him, these integrated interventions will increase the country’s energy generation capacity, strengthen diversification, and consolidate Albania’s energy position in the region.

Karakaçi further noted that the Vlora Energy Hub will establish Albania as a strategic energy gateway for the Balkans, connecting natural gas imports to regional markets and enabling diversified supply routes.

“Security comes from a reliable supply,” he emphasized, adding that cooperation with the United States through the supply of liquefied natural gas is crucial for strengthening the country’s energy security.

The minister also underscored that the project requires careful implementation and adherence to the highest standards, with the aim of transforming Albania into a net energy exporter.
