ALGIERS -Pope Leon XIV highlighted in Algiers, on Monday, Algeria's influence and significant role in fostering stability and promoting peace at the regional and international levels.
In a speech delivered at Riad el-Fath Square before the crowds gathered to welcome him, the Pope stated: "Algeria, with its deep roots and the hope of its youth, is capable of continuing its contribution to stability and dialogue on the international stage." Pope Leo XIV highlighted Algeria’s rich heritage, which, he noted, "has sustained its journey through difficult times and continues to guide its future." He added that "the future lies in the hands of men and women who are peacemakers," emphasizing that "justice will always triumph over injustice, and violence, despite all appearances, will never have the last word." In the same vein, he remarked that mutual respect represents "the path that enables peoples to walk together." On this occasion, the Pope described Algeria as a "crossroads of cultures and religions," calling it a "noble country with a long history and rich traditions, dating back to the time of Saint Augustine and long before." Addressing the Algerian people, he added: "Algeria’s history has known pain and suffered periods of violence, but you have known how to overcome all of that with honor and courage." Pope Leo XIV arrived in Algeria earlier Monday on an official visit at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
