NNA - Lebanon Faces a “Perfect Storm” – UNDP Warns of a Compounded Crisis While Supporting National Response

NNA - "You will not see UNDP on the frontlines delivering aid, but we support the systems that make response and recovery possible," stated UNDP Resident Representative Blerta Aliko.

Speaking to UN News, Aliko described Lebanon as facing a "perfect storm" of compounded crises; driving mass displacement and straining an already fragile system. She also outlined how UNDP is supporting the response by strengthening national coordination, backing first responders and local institutions, and preparing for recovery.

The interview was abruptly interrupted by intense Israeli airstrikes over Beirut, forcing Aliko and her team to relocate to a basement shelter before continuing the conversation.

Beyond the dramatic moment, the full interview provides a detailed account of UNDP’s role: reinforcing the government’s Disaster Risk Management system and national operations room with real-time data; supporting first responders including Civil Defense and fire brigades; sustaining municipalities and essential services such as water, energy, and waste; and mobilizing networks to monitor and mitigate rising tensions and disinformation.

At a time of heightened polarization, UNDP has also partnered with the Ministry of Information to launch a nationwide campaign "Together, we stay strong" promoting solidarity and shared human values. In parallel, the organization is already preparing for recovery, conducting damage and loss assessments and coordinating with national and international partners, while nearly half of its programmes remain suspended due to access and security constraints.

The interview also highlights the critical role of sustained donor support, as needs continue to grow and resources remain under pressure.
