Matteo Berrettini stunned world number 10 Daniil Medvedev 6-0 6-0 in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 Wednesday.
The Roman world number 66, who has struggled with form and injuries since losing to Serb great Novak Djokovic in the 2021 Wimbledon final, said beating the 2021 US Open champ with a double bagel was one of the best performances of his career.
"It's definitely one of the best performances of my career.
I think I only missed three shots, and against a player as troublesome as Daniil," Berrettini, 29, said after the 30-year-old Russian's first ever game-less defeat in his professional career.
"I didn't expect to win like this, obviously, it doesn't happen often, but at the same time, I kept my concentration high because I know tennis is a strange sport, so I kept pushing.
"My weapons worked, and after the first game, where I saved two break points, I felt like I was playing better and better.
"There was a risk of losing focus, and I knew everything could change in the space of a couple of points," the Italian added.
"I always hope to have a good run in tournaments, but the reality is that I need matches like these, I need to win, lose, and digest defeats.
I need time and confidence, things that are built during practice, and I hope the moment of a good tournament comes very soon."
