Italy's unemployment rate dropped to 5.1% in January, the lowest level on record since the start of the statistics series in 2004, according to provisional data released by Istat on Wednesday.
    The national statistics agency said the jobless rate was down by 0.4 of a percentage point with respect to December.
    It said the unemployment rate for under 25s who are active on the labour market fell by 1.9 points to 18.9%.
    Istat said that the employment rate rose by 0.2 of a point to 62.6% and that the inactivity rate was up too, climbing 0.1 of a point to 33.9%.

The agency said 24.181 million people were in work in Italy in January, up by 80,000 on December and by 70,000 on the same month in 2025.
