Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Unemployment in March falls 1.9% on month, up 6.0% on year - IEFP

Lisbon,April.19,2024(Lusa)-The number of unemployed people registered at job centres in Portugal fell by 1.9% in March from February,to 324,616, but that was up 6.0% year-on-year, according to data from the state Institute for Employment and Vocational Training (IEFP).
At the end of March, there were 324,616 people registered as jobless with employment services on the mainland and in the autonomous regions, or 6,392 (or 1.9%) fewer than in February but 18,459 (6.0%) more than in March of 2023, according to the IEFP.
Contributing to the overall year-on-year increase were those registered for less than 12 months (19,204) at job centres, those looking for a new job (17,029) and those with secondary education (16,365).
At regional level, in March, with the exception of the Azores (where the number of jobless was down 11.0% on a year earlier) and Madeira (down 20.3%), unemployment rose year-on-year in all regions, with the highest figure in the Algarve (up 14.4).
Compared to February, the IEFP indicates, with the exception of the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, "the trend is towards a reduction in unemployment, with the greatest variation occurring in the Algarve region (-18.5%)."
By professional group, the IEFP highlights "unskilled workers" (27.5% of the total), "personal service, security and sales workers" (20.3%), "administrative staff" (11.9%) and "specialists in intellectual and scientific activities" (10.2%).
Compared to the same month last year, in March "there was an increase in unemployment in most occupational groups, particularly in "plant and machine operators and assembly workers" (up 11.8%) and "skilled industrial, construction and craft workers" (up 9.7%), the institute said, while highlighting a 3.3% drop in unemployment among "farmers and skilled agricultural, fishing and forestry workers."
In March, 44,387 unemployed people were newly registered with employment services across the country, 8.3% fewer than in February and 7.8% fewer than in Marhc of 2023.
Job offers received during the month totalled 11,087 across the country, up 22.2% on the previous month and down 24.8% on the year.
The economic activities with the highest share of job offers received in March in mainland Portugal were "property, administrative and support service activities" (24.1%), "accommodation, catering and similar" (18.7%), "wholesale and retail trade" (11.2%) and "public administration, education, health and social support activities" (7.2%), the institute said.
Placements in March totalled 8,312 across the country, down 8% on the same month last year and up 23.4% on a year earlier.
