Lusa - Business News - Macau: Gambling revenue in April down 4.9% on month, up 26% on year - DICJ




Macau, China, May.1,2024 (Lusa) - Gambling revenue in Macau fell 4.9% in April compared to the previous month, but was up 26% year on year, the region's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) announced on Wednesday.
Casinos collected a gross 18.545 billion patacas (€2.15 billion) in April compared to 19.593 billion patacas (€2.27 billion) in March, according to DICJ data.
In April 2023, casinos had recorded gross revenues of 14.722 billion patacas (€1.7 billion).
In terms of cumulative gross revenue, the first four months of this year saw 53.7% more than in the same period of last year, with a total of 75.872 billion patacas (€8.8 billion) compared to 49.364 billion patacas (€5.7 billion) between January and April 2023.
Macau last year had total gross gambling revenues of 183 billion patacas (€20.6 billion), four times more than in 2022, after it in January of 2023 lifted all restrictions on the entry of tourists, which had been in place for almost three years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The gambling capital of the world, Macau is the only place in China where casino gambling is legal. Six concessionaires operate in the territory, whose concession contract for the next 10 years came into force on 1 January 2023.
