Lusa - Business News - Portugal: External surplus of €1.572M until February - central bank

Lisbon, April 18,2024(Lusa)- The Portuguese economy had an external surplus of €1.572 billion up to February, more than three times the surplus of €418 million in the same period in 2023, the Bank of Portugal (BdP) announced on Thursday.
Up until February, the balance of goods and services totalled €297 million, which represents "the first surplus in the first two months of the year since 2016", the central bank pointed out.
According to the BdP, the increase in the Portuguese economy's external surplus up to February reflects the €353 million reduction in the deficit in the balance of goods, justified both by the 1.3% increase in exports (€155 million) and the 1.2% reduction in imports (€198 million).
It also reflects an increase of €439 million in the services balance surplus, with the evolution of the travel and tourism balance accounting for more than 60% of this variation, with a growth of €283 million.
Also contributing to this development was a €148 million reduction in the primary income balance deficit, "as a result of a greater allocation to the final beneficiaries of funds received from the European Union in the form of subsidies"; a €55 million increase in the secondary income balance surplus; and a €158 million increase in the capital balance surplus, "mainly due to a greater allocation to the final beneficiaries of funds received from the European Union with a view to investment".
The increase in the Portuguese economy's financing capacity until February led to a positive financial account balance of €1.112 billion.
This balance reflected an increase in financial assets abroad of €6.671 billion, "explained above all by banks' investment in debt securities issued by non-residents (€3.797 billion) and by the growth in intra-group loans granted by companies to non-resident entities (€1.595 billion)".
It also reflected the growth in external liabilities of €5.559 billion, "mainly explained by the investment of non-residents in debt securities issued by public administrations (€6.149 billion) and national banks (€1.475 billion)".
In addition, there was an increase in intra-group investment by non-resident entities in resident non-financial companies (€1.127 billion).
Counteracting these increases, the central bank's liabilities in the form of cash and deposits fell by €4.190 billion.
In the first two months of the year, the sectors that contributed positively to the change in Portugal's net assets vis-à-vis the rest of the world were the central bank (€4.665 billion), other monetary financial institutions (€1.324 billion), insurance companies and pension funds (€628 million), non-monetary financial institutions except insurance companies and pension funds (€397 million) and private individuals (€193 million).
Public administrations and non-financial companies, on the other hand, showed negative changes in their net assets, of €5.753 billion and €342 million respectively.
Considering the month of February alone, the current and capital account balance was €502 million, which corresponds to an increase of €598 million compared to the same period last year, says the BdP, highlighting the 14.6% year-on-year growth in travel and tourism exports, to €1.422 billion, "the highest figure in the series for a month in February".
