Lusa - Business News - Sao Tome: Portugal navy chief reiterates importance of bilateral military ties

Sao Tome,June.14,2024(Lusa)-The chief of staff of Portugal's navy, Henrique Gouveia e Melo, has in a speech in Sao Tome and Principe argued that military cooperation with the West African country "cannot be forgotten or pushed into the background" - a scenario that, according to his hosts, the Sao Tome government, will not happen.
Gouveia e Melo, speaking at a formal ceremony for the Portuguese ship NRP Centauro, which has completed two years of missions in Sao Tome, emphasised that the link between Portugal and its former colony "is built on a robust historical and cultural foundation, consolidated through long and continuous close diplomatic, economic, cultural and military relations" and that this is "fundamental to the stability and prosperity" of the Gulf of Guinea region.
"Portugal and Sao Tome and Principe have a shared history of co-operation and military training that cannot be forgotten or pushed into the background," he said. "The mutual co-operation between the two countries is a unique bond that is constantly evolving and that must always be strengthened.
"I would venture to say that Portugal must be and must continue to be one of the main partners of this magnificent country," he added. "We have made and are making this journey together, sharing difficulties and successes, sorrows and joys, as friendship between people and between countries should also be."
The ceremony for the NRP Centauro is the first since this Portuguese naval unit began operating in Sao Tome on an uninterrupted basis since May 2023, replacing the NRP Zaire after five years on the mission.
Gouveia e Melo noted that the NRP Centauro has carried out various activities, including "two maritime search and rescue operations, logistical support for the armed forces of Sao Tome and Principe, support for social and volunteer organisations, transporting personnel and material between islands.
"During its stay, the ship has carried out intense operational activity [with] 11,394 miles travelled, the equivalent of halfway around the world, with an availability rate of fifty-two percent, reflecting Portugal's friendship and sense of commitment to Sao Tome and Principe in safeguarding maritime safety and the well-being of the region's communities," he said.
Sao Tome's minister of defence and internal administration, Jorge Amado, stressed that "the aim of this cooperation is to guarantee the country's security" and also to save the lives of fishermen and sailors on the high seas, preserve the archipelago's marine wealth and "combat drug trafficking, human trafficking and piracy.
"This is very important for us and we have to be grateful for this co-operation with Portugal," he said. "We think we're going to try to develop more and more activities [to] improve this co-operation."
Asked about Gouveia e Melo's statements on not relegating co-operation between the two countries to the background, Amado gave an assurance that this would not happen.
"Portugal has always been at the forefront, but we have co-operation with several other countries," he said. "Portugal has always been present here; it has never been relegated and will not be relegated to the background, so it will be at the level it deserves to be and that's how we work."
The NRP Centauro, currently operated by a mixed garrison made up of Portuguese and Sao Tome military personnel, continues its mission of training the Sao Tome and Principe Coast Guard, which was recently reinforced with the deployment of a high-speed vessel, the Príncipe, which is to operate from Ana Chaves Bay on the island of Sao Tome.
The vessel, which also includes Sao Tome military personnel in its garrison, is designed for maritime boarding and security actions, thus reinforcing the authorities' capacity to act at sea.
Portugual's government earlier this year said that it was "greatly concerned" by reports that Sao Tome had signed a military cooperation accord with Russia - the latest in a series between Moscow and West African nations - and that Portugal had begun "consultations" on the subject with the authorities in Sao Tome.
