Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: Cabo Delgado villagers capture five alleged insurgents

Pemba, Mozambique, April 23, 2024 (Lusa) - Residents of the village of Mahipa, in the district of Chiùre, in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, have captured and handed over to the authorities five people suspected of being part of terrorist groups operating in the region, local sources told Lusa on Tuesday. According to the same sources, the act took place on Saturday, 20 April, when local people neutralised five strangers in the village, who were immediately captured and handed over to the authorities, on suspicion of being part of the terrorist groups that have been operating in Cabo Delgado province for more than six years.
"In the community of Mahipa, locals became anxious about five people. They were strangers and the community picked them up and handed them over to the local authorities," said a local source.
The situation created unrest among residents, with some preferring to sleep outside their homes, they further reported.
"We panicked, some residents slept outside their homes because you don't know, they're terrorists," said a local source.
Some people left their homes because of rumours of the terrorist group's presence in the Chiùre forests, in the south of the province, and congregated for three days at the Lúrio River checkpoint, on the border between Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces, along National Road 1, trying to reach the neighbouring district of Eráti (Namapa), but were stopped by the defence and security forces, supposedly so as not to create unrest.
"My mother went back to Alaca today because I sent her money so she could go back, she spent three days at the Lúrio River checkpoint with other people, they were afraid of the rumours of the possible presence of terrorists in the Chiùre-Velho area," reported another source from Pemba, the provincial capital.
Since October 2017, Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed insurgency with attacks claimed by groups associated with the Islamic State.
After several months of relative normality, the province of Cabo Delgado has seen new movements and attacks by rebel groups in recent months, which have limited circulation to a few points on the few tarmac roads that give access to various districts.
The insurgency has led to a military response since July 2021, with support from Rwanda, with more than 2,000 troops, and the Southern African Development Community, liberating districts near natural gas projects.
