Lusa - Business News - Portugal: European values under threat; Europe stronger than ever - EP president

Lisbon, Aprl 19,2024 (Lusa) - The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, warned on Friday in Lisbon that European values are increasingly under threat, while also arguing that Europe today is stronger than ever.
Metsola received an honorary doctorate on Friday from the Higher Institute of Social and Political Sciences (ISCSP) of the University of Lisbon - a distinction that she said she welcomed as "a responsibility to continue defending Europe" in her role.
"As a renewed impetus to move forward in the defence of our common European values of freedom, democracy, equality and justice - which, perhaps too often, we take for granted," she said during the ceremony. "And which are being increasingly threatened."
On the other hand, she emphasised that "we are living in difficult times. "But, as the Portuguese saying goes: 'The strongest iron is forged in the hottest fire'.
"That's why I argue that Europe is stronger than ever - because of and not in spite of the challenges we have faced," she went on. "The crises we have faced have made us more resilient, more determined and more united than we have ever been. Our values are more important and emerge stronger, even when they are tested as at few other times in our history."
The Maltese politician also emphasised: "In recent years, our faith in our project, in our values, has been tested many times. But Europe has faced the moment and stood firm."
Metsola listed several crises that Europe has faced in recent years, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, the need to help Ukraine in the face of "Russia's illegal war" there, or in seeking to "defuse tensions in the Middle East," and highlighted European Union initiatives such as "building a true European security and defence union," future EU enlargement to take in Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and countries in the Western Balkans, the approval of the asylum and migration pact, and the green transition.
"Together, over the last five years, we have also given new generations the opportunity to travel, study, work, set up businesses, research and innovate in a great area of freedom," she recalled. "Thanks to EU funding, we are giving young people across Europe the chance to live up to their full potential."
The EU, Metsola acknowledged, "is not perfect.
"We also have to be honest about where we could have done better - where we could have listened more, and more carefully," she said. "Where the frustrations of our processes have alienated people. Where we went too far and too fast. Where perhaps we didn't go far enough."
She warned that in Europe "too many people are still struggling to make ends meet" and "too many companies are still struggling to innovate, suffocated by too much bureaucracy and red tape.
"If we're honest, we'll be fighting against those who peddle a false narrative and try to undermine our democratic processes," she emphasised, arguing that "people need to believe" in the future of Europe "I realise that we're living in a time when it's easier to join the pessimists, when it's more popular to help destroy than to help build, when it's harder to navigate through the constant media bombardment of our senses," she said. "But our path, Europe's path, is under pressure. And we cannot take for granted what we already have."
The president of the European Parliament continues her visit to Portugal on Friday, with the main aim to combat abstention in the coming European elections, scheduled for June, with meetings with the prime minister, Luís Montenegro, the president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and the speaker of parliament, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco.
