Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Far-right party calls state secretary compensation 'immoral'

Lisbon, April.19,2024(Lusa)-Chega believes that the compensation received by the secretary of state for mobility when she left CP is "immoral" and that parliament is facing a case identical to that of former Socialist secretary of state Alexandra Reis.
on Friday , the Correio da Manhã newspaper reported that Cristina Pinto Dias, the current secretary of state for mobility, left CP - Comboios de Portugal in July 2015 with a compensation of around €80,000, and then went on to earn a salary and representation expenses of around €13,440 per month as board director of the Mobility and Transport Authority (AMT), almost double the €7210 she received at CP.
At a press conference in parliament, Chega's president, André Ventura, labelled this case "yet another immorality" and announced that his group would be available to request hearings with the current and former CP administrations.
André Ventura also made a point of saying that the compensation paid to Cristina Pinto Dias in July 2015 was not opposed by current minister Miguel Pinto Luz, who oversaw CP as secretary of state in Pedro Passos Coelho's government.
"We now know that a current government official left a public company for a public institution again with a millionaire's compensation, where she had a salary higher than that of the president of Portugal, a fact that, unfortunately, is still possible in Portugal. She left through voluntary redundancy," emphasised the Chega leader on the reasons for the current secretary of state for mobility's departure from CP.
For this reason, André Ventura concluded that this case is "identical to the one that occurred with Alexandra Reis", the former secretary of state for the treasury, who received compensation of half a million euros to cease her duties as a TAP board director and who then moved to NAV.
"There is a difference in the amounts involved," observed the Chega president, alluding to the fact that the current secretary of state of the AD executive only benefited from compensation of 80,000 euros, while Alexandra Reis received half a million euros.
However, for the Chega president, parliament "can't have a criterion for one thing and not have the same criterion for something else".
"The government officials at the time saw nothing illegal in awarding this compensation [to the current Secretary of State]. We want to know if there have been more cases like this at CP, we want to know if there are more cases of millionaire indemnities paid to people who leave their jobs of their own free will," he said.
As such, André Ventura said that Chega, on the first day of the parliamentary commissions, "will urgently call the current and former CP boards to explain the contours of the case" with the secretary of state, and is willing to use its right to schedule meetings for this purpose.
"The government at the time and the holder of the portfolio at the time knew about the situation and didn't see any illegality or violation of the law or the rule," he emphasised, but first without indicating who he was talking about.
Following questions from journalists, André Ventura then specified that he was referring to the current minister, Miguel Pinto Luz.
