Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Stock market opens lower with Mota-Engil falling more than 2.5%

Lisbon, April 19, 2024 (Lusa) - The Lisbon stock market was trading lower on Friday, with Mota-Engil shares falling 2.57% to €4.17.
At around 09:20 in Lisbon, the PSI was down 0.45% to 6,299.15 points, with 10 shares falling, three rising, and three remaining unchanged (Greenvolt at €8.31, Ibersol at €7.00 and REN at €2.20).
Mota-Engil's shares were followed by those of BCP, CTT and Sonae, which fell 1.91% to €0.31, 1.77% to €4.45 and 0.78% to €0.90.
Shares in NOS, Corticeira Amorim and Altri fell 0.69% to €3.61, 1.77% to €4.45 and 0.78% to €0.90.
Altri and Jerónimo Martins shares both fell 0.28% to €4.92 and €17.86 and the other two shares that fell were Semapa and EDP, which fell 0.26% to €15.12 and 0.16% to €3.64.
Conversely, shares in Navigator, EDP Renováveis, and Galp rose 1.47% to €4.01, 0.15% to €12.99, and 0.06% to €16.10.
The main European stock markets were down today, pending Israel's attack on Iran, whose army has signalled that it will not respond.
The escalation of tensions in the Middle East led to a sharp rise in the price of oil, which, in the case of Brent, came close to $91 at the start of the morning, although at the opening, it softened its rise to $88.15, with a revaluation of 1.15%.
Analysts at Renta4, quoted by Efe, explain that some media have described Israel's attack on Iran as "symbolic," which limits the initial reaction of the markets since crude oil has moderated its rises (it's up more than 4%), as has gold, which is up more than 2% this morning.
At this hour, gold, one of the assets considered a safe Porto in times of uncertainty, is up 0.48% to $2,390.10.
Futures for the main Wall Street indicators are down moderately today, between 0.48% on the Dow Jones and 0.70% on the Nasdaq, the most important technology index.
Analysts at Link Securities, also quoted by Efe, explained that today, investors will have to "process" the consequences that Israel's retaliatory strike this morning against several Iranian military targets, both in Iran and in Syria and Iraq, could have for stability in the region since it opens the door to a frontal war between the two powers.
"If this is the case, it could have consequences for the world economy through an increase in the price of oil, an inflationary factor that would condition the actions of central banks, which would find themselves in the position of having to keep their interest rates at restrictive levels, with the consequent impact on world economic growth."
In terms of exchange rates, the euro opened weaker on the Frankfurt exchange market, at $1.0645, compared to $1.0653 in the previous session.
