Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Occasion made decision for president to end legislature - former PM

Lisbon, April,19,2024(Lusa)- Former Prime Minister António Costa believes that the "occasion made the decision" for the president of Portugal to end the previous legislature "prematurely" and that the right-wing was frantically looking for a pretext to dissolve parliament.
This interpretation of the events that led Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to call early elections can be found in the preface written on 15 March by António Costa for a book by the former president of the PS Parliamentary Group Eurico Brilhante Dias, called "Written words".
In an indirect reference to the judicial investigation known as "Operation Influencer", which led to his resignation as prime minister on 7 November last year, António Costa points out that we will never know "what the future would be like if the past had been different".
"What is certain is that we came to the end of this parliamentary term prematurely by decision of the President of the Republic. The occasion made the decision, but since October 2022, the right has been in a frenzy looking for a pretext for dissolution," he says.
For the former leader of the executive, especially since then, there had been "a race against the clock with the control of inflation and the implementation of the RRP" (Recovery and Resilience Plan).
"The dissolution earned them a tangential victory, which left them in the hands of the populist far-right," emphasises António Costa in the text he wrote five days after the last legislative elections.
With regard to Eurico Brilhante Dias, the former prime minister says that "it was a privilege to have shared" almost two years of work with him, "which were the most demanding of my eight years in government".
António Costa then indirectly referenced the fact that Eurico Brilhante Dias had sided with António José Seguro rather than with him in the Socialist primary elections in September 2014.
"We're from different generations, we came from internal disagreements, we didn't know each other personally, but over the years Eurico Brilhante Dias has been one of the political figures I've most enjoyed getting to know. For his technical competence, his political ability and, above all, for his personality, which was as serene as it was firm," he writes.
António Costa says that he surprised Eurico Brilhante Dias, who had been secretary of state for internationalisation, when he invited him to become PS parliamentary leader in March 2022 after the Socialists won the elections with an absolute majority.
"What is certain is that he didn't hesitate to take on the challenge with a militant spirit of mission. For my part, I thought that his experience in parliamentary leadership would reinforce the political dimension of his career and that, on the contrary, it would not be detrimental for him to take on ministerial duties in the future," he said.
For António Costa, in short, Eurico Brilhante Dias "has the right personality to lead a caucus with an absolute majority, which wanted to distinguish itself by its capacity for dialogue with the opposition".
The book by the former leader of the PS Parliamentary Group has 143 pages of text. It contains some of the speeches he made at what he considers to be the most memorable moments of the previous legislature.
"With this book, I want to leave a historical record of almost two years of absolute PS majority in parliament, highlighting progress in very important areas. Through the actions of the PS Parliamentary Group, I highlight the land bank, the measures proposed to be part of the Decent Work Agenda, professional organisations and medically assisted death," Eurico Brilhante Dias told Lusa.
In his book's conclusions, the former chairman of the Socialist bench believes that he held office for "two very intense years, based on three budgets" in a country that is now "better off" than in 2022, "despite the particularly difficult context."
The hastiness of the end of the previous Legislature "interrupted a political project that had been voted for by the Portuguese and that was supposed to continue until 2026. But as our founder and number one militant, Mário Soares, used to say, only those who give up fighting are defeated," Eurico Brilhante Dias added.
