Lusa - Business News - Portugal: South Korea companies invest in renewables, chips - interview

Lisbon, April 17, 2024 (Lusa) - South Korea's ambassador to Portugal, Cho Yeongmoo, expects investments from South Korean companies in the areas of semiconductors ('chips') and renewable energies to materialise this year, namely in Aveiro.
"We've been discussing various projects in the semiconductor area, but these are still in progress. I hope we can see tangible results from these discussions this year," said the diplomat, on the one-year anniversary of the official visit of then Prime Minister António Costa to South Korea, a "very important occasion to take relations to another level" between the two countries.
In an interview with the Lusa news agency, Cho Yeongmoo recalled that in November last year, SK Hynix, a semiconductor production company, signed a memorandum of understanding with AICEP - Portugal's Agency for Development and Foreign Trade.
At the time, AICEP said in a statement that the agreement aimed to develop "a significant investment project in the semiconductor area in 2024," without mentioning any figures.
Also in 2023, Kotra - the South Korean government's trade and investment promotion agency - reopened its offices in Lisbon after closing in 2007 and is acting as "a catalyst between companies from both countries", according to the ambassador, who says there are many requests for information from South Korean and Portuguese companies.
"Kotra's current office is playing a bridging role," he told Lusa, noting the visit last year of a Korean business delegation and the expectations of more visits in 2024 by businesspeople from the battery, cosmetics and automobile sectors.
In the field of renewable energies, the diplomat reported on the expansion plans of CS Wind, a wind tower manufacturer in Aveiro.
"They want to expand their manufacturing facilities," summarised Cho Yeongmoo, thus underlining the increase in investment and the number of jobs in a location that allows exports by sea.
Drawing examples from other companies present, the ambassador said that "the area of renewables is also very promising" for Lisbon and Seoul to "explore greater cooperation".
The countries have also developed relations at the regional level. Since 2007, Madeira and Jeju, the largest South Korean island located south of the Korean peninsula, have agreed on a twinning relationship, with the aim of cooperating in various areas such as tourism, education, and the economy.
"In 2022, when I arrived, we celebrated the 15th anniversary of the 'brotherhood' between the two islands," said the ambassador, adding that the Covid-19 pandemic may have "prevented the exchange of visits" but that he hopes that "people from Madeira can go to Jeju Island" and that Koreans can go to the Portuguese archipelago.
Last year, Sintra also finalised a twinning agreement with the Yangsan Municipality following a visit by his delegation. According to the ambassador, several municipal governments are interested in having closer relations with Portugal.
"Some municipal governments wanted to have a close relationship with Portuguese cities, so we're working on that, and I hope we can draw many conclusions from the 'brotherhood' between the cities of our countries," he said.
Speaking to Lusa, Cho Yeongmoo also noted the Portuguese interest in Korean culture, namely music and films, indicating the promotion of various events to present the diversity that exists, including gastronomy, in which there is cooperation with schools from Turismo de Portugal.
The Korean community in Portugal numbers around 300 people, while the number of tourists reached a peak before the Covid-19 pandemic, with 210,000 people, and last year, there were 160,000 in various places such as Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Fátima and Algarve, the diplomatic representation said.
