Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: WB leader highlights nation's role in Southern Africa's energy

Washington, April,16,2024 (Lusa) — The president of the World Bank Group, Ajay Banga, emphasised on Tuesday Mozambique's role as a base for the electricity market in southern Africa following a meeting in Washington with Mozambique's president and promised new partnerships with the country.
"We had a good discussion about the work that is being done, the results of the economic development that Mozambique is trying to achieve, the improvement in economic growth, and the improvement in inflation. But the most important thing is that we discussed the opportunity for young people and their future and how, if we invest in young people, this will become the future of the country," emphasised Ajay Banga, speaking to journalists after meeting with Mozambique's President Filipe Nyusi.
At the meeting, which took place at the World Bank's headquarters in the US capital, the two leaders discussed "their [young people's] importance for employment and how to create jobs with certain assets that Mozambique is already doing a good job with, such as energy and electricity," he said.
Mozambique has not only improved "access to electricity for its own population, and there is more to come, but it is also becoming a base for the electricity market in southern Africa, an excellent step forward," he added.
For the president of the World Bank Group, there is still "a lot that the government and the private sector can do together", not just in electricity: "Including tourism and infrastructure, all aligned to create jobs for the future of our world, which is young people. So, I want to congratulate the president and his government for the work they are doing. I look forward to more joint partnerships.
Mozambique's president began a visit to Washington on Tuesday, where he is leading the International Conference on the Sustainable and Integrated Management of the Miombo Forest, which runs until Wednesday, in the presence of politicians and experts from Africa and the United States, to debate the sustainability of the Miombo Forest, which covers eleven countries in southern Africa, covering an area of two million square kilometres, currently under threat, covering 300 million people.
In March 2023, the World Bank approved a $300 million loan for the Access to Finance and Economic Opportunities in Mozambique Project, "Mais Oportunidades," which was financed by the group's International Development Association.
According to information from the World Bank, "the project is expected to help create more than 26,000 new jobs over six years" until 2029.
"The combination of guarantees and credit lines aims to mobilise up to $450 million in private sector loans for MSMEs [micro, small and medium-sized enterprises]," the World Bank added, and the project aims to promote financial inclusion by linking members of informal savings groups with financial institutions.
Mozambique managed more than half a million new household electricity connections by 2023, raising the coverage rate above 50%, according to last year's budget execution data, consulted by Lusa.
According to the Energy Transition Strategy (ETS), reported last February by Lusa, Mozambique plans to achieve universal access to energy by 2030 through measures that include expanding the electricity infrastructure and developing off-grid solutions.
The document approved by the government points out that "the expansion of the grid will be fundamental to guaranteeing universal access to energy," both electrical and thermal. It recalls that, according to the National Electrification Strategy, to achieve this goal in 2030, with 70% of homes connected to the grid and 30% off-grid, "approximately 2.5 million new grid connections and two million off-grid connections" will be needed.
It also states that high-voltage lines will be added or upgraded to supply the hydroelectric capacity to be installed after 2030, as well as to neighbouring countries.
