Lusa - Business News - Mozambique: State wants to raise funds to protect Miombo forest at US event

Washington, April 16, 2024 (Lusa) - The Mozambican government is hoping to mobilise investment to protect the Miombo Forest, budgeted at US$550 million, at an international conference starting on Tuesday in Washington, which includes 11 southern African countries.
"We hope that at this conference, not only from the member states, but also from all the other players, who are the cooperation partners in this case, we can increase the funding package for this initiative," said Mozambique's minister for the environment, Ivete Maibaze, before the conference kicked off.
African and US politicians and experts will debate the sustainability of the Miombo Forest at an international conference organised by Mozambique and attended by Mozambican president Filipe Nyusi.
The Miombo Forest covers two million square kilometres and encompasses 11 southern African countries, including Mozambique and Angola. The conference is the result of an initiative by the Mozambican president, who in August 2022 brought together the leaders of ten other countries in the "Maputo Declaration on the Miombo Forest" to promote a common approach to the "Sustainable and Integrated Management of the Miombo Forests and the Protection of the Greater Zambezi Basin".
"An action plan was drawn up after the Maputo Conference, which indicates a budget of around US$550 million [€518 million]. And Mozambique, together with its partners, has managed to mobilise around US$154 million [€145 million]," added the minister, pointing out that Mozambique has the second largest area of this forest, after Angola.
The International Conference on the Sustainable and Integrated Management of the Miombo Forest kicks off with a ministerial meeting and panel discussions, will be attended by the Mozambican head of state on Wednesday and will include the verbal adoption of the Declaration of Commitment to the Miombo Forest Initiative.
"One of the main results will be the approval of the Letter of Commitment (...) it is important at this conference that we manage to mobilise investment and funding so that this initiative becomes a reality and that we can, in the medium term, manage to comply with the actions indicated in it," he said, stressing the impacts of the devastation that this forest is facing.
The conference, which will be attended by members of the US Congress and African parliaments, aims to promote investment opportunities within the framework of the implementation of the Maputo Declaration on Miombo, with a view to achieving the goals on climate change, biodiversity conservation and integrated sustainable development.
The Miombo Forest provides numerous goods and services that guarantee the livelihoods of more than 300 million inhabitants of these countries, including tropical and subtropical grasslands, thickets and savannahs, constituting the largest tropical dry forest ecosystem in the world.
"They are responsible for maintaining the Great Zambezi, one of the most important transnational river basins," explain the promoters of the conference, which is also organised by the International Conservation Caucus Foundation (ICCF) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
The Maputo Declaration on the Miombo Forest, signed, in addition to Mozambique and Angola, by Botswana, Malawi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, establishes priorities for the sustainable management and governance of the natural resources of the Miombo ecosystems.
The wide variety of species found in the Miombo Forests provide diversified ecosystem services and products, considered "extremely important for the livelihoods and income generation of local communities".
The growing population and the consequent increase in demand for agricultural land, combined with the unsustainable use and over-extraction of natural resources in parts of the Miombo Forests, and the impacts of climate change, are, however, a threat.
