Lusa - Business News - Portugal: No meteorological drought at the end of Q1- - weather service

Lisbon, Aprilز15,2024(Lusa) - According to the IPMA weather report, no region of mainland Portugal was in a meteorological drought on the last day of March, which classified last month as very rainy.
On the last day of February, the Algarve and a large area of the lower Alentejo (14.2% of the territory in total) were in a weak or moderate meteorological drought, with most of the territory (43.7%) in a normal situation.
According to the bulletin from the Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the percentage of water in the soil increased significantly in the southern region during March.
The total rainfall for the month was 177.8 millimetres (equivalent to 177.8 litres per square metre), almost three times the average for the reference period (1981-2010), making it the 16th wettest March since 1931 and the 4th since 2000.
The IPMA highlights the passage of depression Nelson at the end of the month, which caused flooding in some parts of the country, especially in the Lisbon metropolitan area.
March was considered normal in terms of air temperature, with an average value of 12.43 °C, very close to the normal value for the 1981-2010 reference period.
The bulletin highlights the fact that there was some variability in air temperature values, with low values at the beginning of the month (01 to 09) and high values between 15 and 24 March, especially on the 22nd and 23rd, when the maximum and minimum temperatures were much higher than the monthly average, leading to a heatwave in some parts of the north and centre of the country.
The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) has warned that even though the rains at the end of February raised the dams' reserves to 44% of their total storage capacity, the Algarve is still in an extreme hydrological drought.
According to the IPMA, there are four classes of drought.
Meteorological drought is associated with a significant decrease in precipitation, hydrological drought is linked to the storage status of reservoirs, lagoons, aquifers and water lines in general, and agricultural drought is related to the lack of water caused by an imbalance between the water available in the soil, the crops' needs and plant transpiration.
Economic drought is the combined effect of the natural and social impacts that result from a lack of water.
