Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Stock market slips with Galp down 1.40%

Lisbon, April 15, 2024 (Lusa) - The Lisbon stock market was trading lower on Monday, with Galp shares leading the losses, falling 1.40% to €16.20.
At around 09:15 in Lisbon, the PSI was down by 0.28% to 6,319.85 points, with seven shares falling, seven rising, and two remaining unchanged (Altri at €5.07 and NOS at €3.60).
Before the market opened, Galp reported that its refining margin doubled in the first quarter compared to the previous one, from $6.10 to $12 per barrel of oil, but the figure fell by 16% compared to the same period in 2023, and oil and gas production fell by 4% year-on-year and by 9% quarter-on-quarter, to 115,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
Galp's shares were followed by Jerónimo Martins, REN and Sonae, which fell 0.71% to €18.12, 0.68% to €2.20 and 0.45% to €0.89. EDP, Navigator and CTT shares fell by 0.39% to €3.60, 0.36% to €3.93 and 0.11% to €4.41.
In the opposite direction, Corticeira Amorim shares led the gains, rising 0.62% to €0.78.
Also rising, shares in Mota-Engil, EDP Renováveis and Ibersol were up 0.45% to €4.47, 0.38% to €13.16 and 0.29% to €7.02.
The other three shares that rose were Semapa, BCP and Greenvolt, which were up 0.27% to €15.12, 0.07% to €0.30 and 0.06% to €8.31.
The main European stock markets were up today in a session of caution in the face of tensions in the Middle East after Iran launched an attack on Israel on Saturday.
On the economic front, investors will be paying close attention to the Eurozone's industrial production figures for February, while in the US, Goldman Sachs will be presenting its results.
Although last Friday, the possibility of an Iranian offensive in retaliation for Israel's attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria raised tensions in the markets (with rises in the price of oil, gold and bonds), this Monday, prudence prevails, waiting for new developments.
Israel is considering a possible response to the attack, but the international community has called for tensions to calm down and for the country not to respond immediately.
The analysts at Renta4 explain that after Iran's statements "that the matter is closed" and the US's "that it will not support a counter-attack" by Israel, "the markets are relatively calm, assuming that the tension will not escalate further".
"On the contrary, investors will continue to watch Israel's reaction and, if there is retaliation and, consequently, a prolongation of the conflict in the Middle East, we could see further rises in oil prices, as well as in safe havens such as government bonds, gold and the dollar," they warn.
Pending developments, the market is cautiously welcoming this increase in tensions: the price of Brent oil, the benchmark in Europe, was down by 0.87% at this hour, to $89.65.
A barrel of Brent oil for June delivery opened today at $89.74 on London's Intercontinental Exchange Futures (ICE), down from $90.45 on Friday, following Iran's attack on Israel on Saturday night.
Gold, one of the assets considered a safe haven in times of uncertainty, is rising by 0.48% to $2,354.81, but is far from the all-time highs it set last Friday of $2,431.52.
In the debt market, sovereign bond yields rose: the US to 4.556% and the German to 2.388%.
Futures on Wall Street's main indicators pointed to a green opening.
On the currency front, the euro opened stronger on the Frankfurt exchange market, at $1.0651 compared to $1.0643 in the previous session.
