Lusa - Business News - Portugal: BFA chair warns of Europe losing influence in Africa

Carcavelos, Portugal, July 19, 2023 (Lusa) - The chairman of Banco de Fomento Angola (BFA) warned European countries on Wednesday that they were losing influence in Africa, saying that if others, such as Asia and the United States, were investing it was because there are ways to do so.
In the last 20 years, we have seen "a decrease in investments in Africa from European countries" and, at the same time, "the increase in Asian investments, and more related to China," said Luis Gonçalves in an intervention at the EurAfrican Forum, which takes place in Carcavelos, near Lisbon.
"European countries need to find a new way of dealing with Africa," he said, because "if they don't understand that, they will certainly lose the influence they had in the past in Africa, because many other parts of the world - China, Asia and even the United States - are now looking at Africa in a different way," he warned.
Africa is the continent where opportunities lie, he said, in line with other speakers discussing the theme "Supporting sustainable financing for growth" on the second and final day of the Forum.
"It is very important not to be afraid to deal with the facts," said the chairman of BFA, who gave the example of projects in which the bank is involved and of companies, many Portuguese, "investing in Angola and finding the way to manage the risk to invest in the country".
"Many companies, many entrepreneurs are in Africa", and the knowledge is there, he explained, so others can "ask them to share their knowledge and experience" in order to find "a way to obtain capital to go to Africa and a way to finance projects".
Hanan Morsy, chief economist at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, also focussed his speech, via video conference, on the "need to know more about the real situation and overcome fears".
"There is a gap in the perception of the situation and the risks that we have to overcome," he said because many investors are concerned about social and political instability.
Hanan Morsy called for looking at the opportunities that are there in a continent of young people while Europe is ageing and in need of projects in almost all areas.
"The potential is there, and the sustainable development of Africa is needed not only for the African continent but for the world," he said, speaking of "huge opportunities" in multiple sectors, from agriculture to energy, transport, energy infrastructure and logistics, battery and vehicle production, and with the raw materials for this available locally.
