Lusa - Business News - Portugal: European workers of Mexico's Sigma slam attitude of Portuguese unit

Lisbon, June 1, 2023 (Lusa) - The body representing employees in Europe of companies owned by Mexico's Sigma Alimentos, including Portugal's Nobre Alimentação, have expressed "repudiation and indignation" at the attitude of the management of the latter unit, which is located in Rio Maior, in Santarem district, declaring their solidarity with the demands of the workers there.
In a statement, the Agriculture, Food, Beverage and Tobacco Workers Trade Union (SINTAB) on Thursday released a motion approved in Madrid, last Monday, in a meeting of the European Works Council of the Campofrío Group, expressing the solidarity of Sigma group workers with those of Nobre Alimentação.
"Upon learning that the company Nobre has updated the food allowance by only 70 cents in the last 14 years and has rejected all the proposals presented in the workers' claim book, we express our total repudiation and indignation," the motion states.
The workers of the group's companies located in Europe declare themselves "deeply concerned" by the attitude of Nobre's management, stressing that Sigma, a "world leader in food products", has a stated "commitment to justice and valuing its workers in all its operations."
They also express "consternation" at the fact that, even after the strike on 28 April, the company is still not responding to the workers' demands.
SINTAB recalls that Nobre workers demand "decent wage increases" - with the minimum salary in the company to be set at €850 "with immediate effect" - the negotiation of Collective Bargaining for the meat sector and/or the signing of a Company Agreement.
They also demanded the updating of the food subsidy to €7/day, 25 working days of holiday, standard working hours - namely a reduction to 35 hours per week - and the right to a day off on the worker's birthday or that of children up to 12 years old.
Diogo Lopes, from SINTAB, told Lusa on Thursday that Nobre workers are to meet again in plenary on 15 June, and are determined to go on strike once a month until they get a positive response from the company.
According to the union official, at the meeting held after the strike on 28 April, the management maintained its position of refusal of any wage increase, which it had already expressed after the strike on 9 February.
The group's European workers pledge to "closely monitor" the development of the situation and to "take the necessary measures" within their power to support the claims of the Nobre workers.
"As workers of the Sigma Group, we affirm the importance of respecting and valuing the rights and dignity of all workers," reads the states the motion, which was passed unanimously. "We demand, therefore, that the company Nobre Alimentação reviews its current position and opens a space for constructive dialogue with the workers and their union representatives, aiming for a fair and satisfactory resolution of their claims which, as we see here, are not unreasonable and only aim to obtain a healthier and less painful standard of living."
The motion, which is to be handed to the European bosses of the multinational food company, calls for "points of balance to be found in order to reach an agreement that meets the demands of the Portuguese workers."
At the meeting held in Madrid, SINTAB also secured unanimous approval for a motion submitted by the Portuguese representative, "expressing deep concern over the current working conditions in Portugal."
Sigma is a subsidiary of Alfa, a multinational conglomerate headquartered in Monterrey, Mexico, with holdings in companies active in the petrochemicals and aluminum auto components businesses, as well as refrigerated foods.
