Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Lisbon book fair opens focusing on young people, fearing weather

Lisbon, May.25,2023(Lusa) - The Lisbon Book Fair opened on Thursday with booksellers expecting a turnover that confirms the market growth and focusing on young people driven by social networks, despite the fear of rain and the new schedule.
On the first day, the Book Fair had not yet officially opened and some pavilions were finishing the storage of books in their showcases and some members of the public were already visiting the exhibitors in search of new books and discounts.
In its 93rd edition, the largest literary event in Lisbon presents itself with the "largest editorial offer" ever, with 139 participants, more than 980 publishing houses, the same 340 pavilions of the 2022 edition, and a plan of launches and events that already exceeds 2,000, said Pedro Sobral, president of the Portuguese publishers and booksellers association (APEL), to Lusa, showing hope that the fair "continues to grow" and that it exceeds last year's 776,000 visitors.
For that, he believes that the "new enthusiasm for reading" that we can see is contributing, "namely in young readers".
"We hope that, despite the weather and the presumable football league celebrations (at the Marques de Pombal statue and roundabout, close to the book fair venue in the Edward VII park) they come to take advantage of what these 190 publishers have at their disposal."
The official believes that a visit to the fair, even if it is just for a stroll or to eat and have a drink, is an open door to "stumble upon books" and come into contact with the "hundreds of writers available to talk and to sign autographs".
"We know that if people come into contact with books and reading, we gain new readers and by gaining new readers we also gain a much freer, much more democratic and much more moderate Portugal," he added, hoping that, "regardless of the weather conditions", "this year will be better than last year".
The same expectation has the communication manager of the Almedina Group, Bruno Mano, who says he is curious to see how the return to the original date will be, "because the last few years have been extremely good in terms of sales and attendance".
This year the Lisbon Book Fair reopened in May, and runs until June 11th, after having adopted an alternative calendar in the last two years - between August and September - due to the pandemic.
Pointing out that at this time of the year the weather is always more unpredictable and that "rain is surely the worst enemy of the people who come to the fair", he expressed his enthusiasm, encouraged by the requests of people who "even during the set up" already wanted to buy books, which is not possible because "the system is programmed to work only after the opening".
Anyway, the head of communication at Almedina said that every year the group has grown steadily, not only in the area of Law, which is its "watermark", but in all the other areas, namely fiction, Minotauro, and young adult, "which is a growing public, thanks to social networks, 'Instagrams' and 'TikToks'".
"We have noticed that there is a growth in reading habits among the youngest, which is surprising for us and we have tried to keep up with the supply."
The same perception has the communication director of the Bertrand Círculo Group, Sofia Lima, who said there are many people enthusiastic about visiting the fair, namely the "younger age groups that participated a lot last year".
"This year we expect them to come, to meet here, to be with the books, to spend the whole day. We have been working with the creators of literary content for many years, but we have noticed that last year there was a great growth in the dynamics and the way they work", she stressed.
Sofia Lima said that before the official opening of the fair, scheduled for 12:30pm, there had already been a lot of activity, mainly from the Portuguese, but also "quite a few foreigners".
Clara Capitão, publisher of the Penguin Random House Portugal group, who is hopeful of a good turnover, but a little more pessimistic, recalled the "several setbacks" foreseen, such as the "threat of bad weather" and the need "to close the fair earlier on Saturday, which is always a very busy day in terms of public and events, due to the celebrations of the probable victory of Benfica", which forced the rescheduling of "dozens of events for other days, which is not easy, because the days are limited and space is limited".
Clara Capitão also noticed that there were fewer people at the opening of the fair than last year.
"We have to think that it's a Thursday and people work, and last year, being at the end of August, there were many people who were still on the last days of their holidays," she added.
As for the phenomenon of what he calls "'book influencers'", he acknowledges the "undeniable role they have played in promoting reading among younger readers".
"Last year, the book fair had a large percentage of people who had never come to the book fair before, they were young readers, precisely because of the role that 'Booktok' has played, among other networks - Instagram is also very influential - and in fact the large slice of new audience last year was young readers. And, without prejudice, one has to recognise the fundamental role they have in that promotion."
Making its debut at the Lisbon Book Fair this year is the Zigurate publishing house, launched less than a year ago by journalist Carlos Vaz Marques, who was visibly excited, but also cautious.
"My knowledge is only of someone who used to visit and attend the book fair as a customer and now I'm on this side, I'm in another position, so I'm really on a journey of discovery, it's an adventure", he confessed.
Recognising that the business of the publisher has been going very well and finding its niche in the market, Carlos Vaz Marques recalls that he has been working with books for a long time, "but in a different way".
"Now I'm learning here the specifics, the trapdoors of a business that is very complicated, where the margins are very small, but I think that the important thing is that the books reach people."
Among the first visitors to the fair was singer Carolina Deslandes, who has always been a great reader and who is present at the opening of the fair every year.
Strolling between the pavilions and looking at the books, Carolina Deslandes was waiting for her father, with whom she has kept the tradition of going to the fair on the first day for lunch and to buy books for many years.
"I like to come as soon as the fair opens, because it's usually less messy, it's cooler, although that's not really the case today. It's already a very old tradition. I usually say it's the best day of the year, for me it's better than Christmas, it's better than my birthday."
The singer highlighted the responsibility that everyone has for keeping this tradition alive, even for their children, to "know what the book is and to have the habit of reading".
"I think this is a great celebration, which has nothing to do with technology, which has nothing to do with anything that depends on machines, this depends only on your will to take an object and make the object your own, and I think it is so rare, that it is 'for the love of god, let's save the book fair for many years', because I think it is really necessary," she said, pointing out that reading is one of the things she most enjoys doing in life and that the largest collection she has is books.
As a reader, she sees the new movement of young readers driven by social networks in a very positive way: "picking up a book to read is already a good start and I think there will always be a fashion" and if the fashion, instead of having certain shoes or clothes, "is reading books, I think that is great".
The opening ceremony is scheduled for 8pm today and all the programme and information about the participants is on feiradolivrodelisboa.pt.
