Lusa - Business News - CPLP: Portugal available to help Gabon obtain observer status - minister

Luanda,March 28,2023(Lusa)- Portugal's minister of foreign affairs has expressed willingness to "strengthen the relationship" with Gabon within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), the first step towards obtaining the status of observer country.
João Gomes Cravinho was speaking to journalists on Monday on the sidelines of the 16th extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers of the CPLP held in Luanda, commenting on Gabon's wish to join the community.
The Portuguese minister said that despite Gabon not yet being in the group of over 30 associated countries with observer status, the community is interested in closer relations.
"Gabon is not yet one of them (of the group of observer countries), so the natural thing is for that step to be taken and we will always be available for dialogue with Gabon which is a country geographically very close to Sao Tome and is also not far from Angola," he argued.
"We are always interested in closer relations with Gabon and the first step is the status of associate observer country," said João Gomes Cravinho, who headed the Portuguese delegation to the meeting.
The minister also welcomed the spirit of understanding at the meeting and noted the importance of "consolidation" of the economic pillar, noting that the meeting took place in a fraternal and open atmosphere in all areas. "It (the meeting) took place in a very friendly, brotherly tone, in which all the different issues were dealt with with openness and with a search for consensus that characterises the CPLP and that it was possible to reach an understanding in all areas through good faith and the spirit that characterises the CPLP," the Portuguese minister said. The CPLP ministers for foreign relations and foreign affairs at the meeting approved the resolutions on the review of the organisation's statutes and on changing the regulations of associated observers. The resolution on the creation of the direction of economic and business affairs in the executive secretariat of the CPLP was also approved at this meeting. According to João Gomes Cravinho, the change to the CPLP statutes arose from the fact that the current one had "lost relevance over time," noting that new areas of work had been added to the CPLP. The Angolan presidency, "for example, was very important for the consolidation of a fourth pillar of the CPLP which is the pillar of economic cooperation, this has to be reflected in the statutes," he noted. "And throughout the morning it was also possible to debate the theme of the seas and also share what are the main dynamics and challenges of each of our countries in our national and regional situations that differ, of course, we are on four continents and this sharing is a way to enrich our mutual knowledge," he stressed. "The Role of the Seas and Oceans in the International Projection of the CPLP" was the theme of this 16th extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers of the CPLP, led by its acting president and Angolan foreign affairs minister, Téte António. The organisation's executive secretary, Zacarias da Costa, was also at the table chairing this meeting. Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and Timor-Leste are the nine member states of the CPLP and all attended the meeting in person in Luanda.
