Lusa - Business News - Angola: Government denies pressuring news portal

Luanda,March,17,2023(Lusa)-The Angolan government said on Friday today that it "did not have access to the report" on the reasons for the police action against TV Camunda News and denied "restrictions" to press freedom in the country.
According to the National Information Director of the Ministry of Telecommunications, Information Technology and Media (MTTICS), the ministry "has difficulties in issuing a concrete opinion" regarding the actions of the SIC (Criminal Investigation Service) on TV Camundanews, which broadcasts online content.
"The ministry did not have access to the report that gives the reasons or causes of this police action, so we have some difficulty in issuing an opinion in relation to that," João Demba said today, speaking to Lusa.
Without going into further details, Demba denied that there were restrictions on press freedom in the country, an issue that has constitutional protection, considering that the complaints made by opponents, journalists and non-governmental organisations "seem more like a form of pressure on the state".
"I don't believe that it is a claim of the state to restrict freedoms, for example, these are just opinions, when we know that there is an international institution that annually makes the publication of a report on the index of press freedom," he replied when asked about the alleged pressures to Camunda News.
According to the MTTICS national information director, in the last five years, Angola has made progress in the press freedom index, a report, he stressed, where "some of the people who claim to be serious in Angola answer the questionnaires."
"Angola has only improved its position in that index," João Demba insisted.
The owner of TV Camundanews said on Wednesday that he had decided to suspend the broadcast of the online channel due to the pressure he has been subjected to by SIC and the feeling of insecurity that has affected the entire team.
Speaking to Lusa, David Boio explained that he was called to the authorities to be heard as a declarant because of a programme by social activist 'Gangsta', suspected of criminal association, instigation of rebellion, instigation of civil disobedience and outrage against the president of Angola.
"They called me to go to the SIC as a declarant. I went there, but in practice, rather than asking questions about the process, they asked questions about our portal," said David Boio.
Accompanied by his lawyer, the businessman explained that, in May last year, they had received a notification from the Ministry of Social Communication to present the documents that authorised the operation of the portal.
"At the time, we responded to the ministry, saying that we were unaware, according to the analysis we did of the Press Law, we found no legal framework for the content that is simply on social networks, and the government never answered us back," he stressed.
Gangsta, a critic of the government, refuses to comply with the term of identity and residence imposed on him by the Angolan justice system and is camping in an uncertain place.
Asked about the state of press freedom in Angola in recent years, Boio said that "before 2022, before the elections, they [the government] didn't give much importance to this internet thing, they always said that this is nothing, that Angolans don't have access to the internet, but they were surprised last year".
The importance of the channel "caught their attention when we did an interview with Adalberto [leader of the National Union for Total Independence of Angola], which had a large audience", he said.
The Union of Angolan Journalists (SJA) considered the pressure on the owner of Camundanews to suspend the broadcast of journalistic content for alleged violation of the Press Law an attack on press freedom.
Lusa contacted the spokesman of the national board of SIC, Manuel Halaiwa, who promised to comment on the matter later today.
