Lusa - Business News - Portugal: Europe's largest reservoir delivered more water in 2022

Beja,Portugal,March 17,2023(Lusa)- The volume of water for irrigation supplied by the Alqueva reservoir to the perimeters of its multipurpose development and adjoining perimeters increased in 2022 compared to the previous year, the system's management company said on Friday.
According to a Report of the customers of the Alqueva Development and Infrastructure Company (EDIA) in 2022, seen by Lusa, the Alqueva Global System supplied its customers with a total of 516,585,724 cubic metres (m3) of water last year.
The largest amount, around 363,223,570 m3, was for beneficiaries of the perimeters of the Alqueva Multipurpose Enterprise (EFMA) and individual irrigators.
"It can be seen that there was an increase in consumption of about 15% [compared to 2021, which was 315,075,844 m3], with this increase compared to 2018 reaching 85%," the report stresses.
In the document, EDIA rejects that this increase is related to the drought that affected the region, in virtue of the precipitation values in 2021 and 2022 "having been quite close".
"The justification may lie in the fact that there are other parameters" that "may also have an impact on the evolution of consumption", it said.
As an example, the company pointed to the "increase in the enrolled area, albeit residual, and the new olive and almond groves, the time lag between the periods of rainfall and the crop phase.
Last year the irrigation perimeters bordering EFMA received 105,677,593 m3 of water from Alqueva, "around 230% more" than the previous year, an increase partly due to the drought.
"Such a high volume is related to the low level at which the reservoirs of the adjoining ones were and also by the need to store a greater amount of water in this year [2022], since it was foreseen in 2022 that the water tariff for 2023 would undergo a significant increase," the report notes.
EDIA added that the area irrigated by Alqueva, through EFMA and the adjoining perimeters, "was close to 151,000 hectares".
In 2022, the Alqueva Global System also provided about 27 million m3 of water for direct abstractions, as well as almost 11 million m3 for industrial supply and around 9.7 million m3 for public supply to populations.
In this last area, public supply, 162,868 customers from 13 municipalities in the districts of Beja and Évora were supplied by Alqueva through Águas Públicas do Alentejo, linked to the Águas de Portugal Group.
